SOCIAL BUSINESS INNOVATION
Designing Services for Privacy in Public Spaces

Interaction Design Institute in Ivrea, Foundation Class, 3a
January 13th, 2003/February 6th, 2003

Intent
By using the topic of Privacy in Public Spaces, the intent is to experience a design process based on:
_a multi-disciplinary work/team/knowledge;
_the use of Scenarios as communication tools from problem setting to problem solving.

Framework
Social - business stands for innovation that answers social needs while creating new business opportunities.

Subject
Nowadays, many issues related to privacy generate an interesting problem setting in public spaces. Advanced mobile communication services raise new issues to be explored by design.

Goal
On the basis of existing situations, the goal is to identify new "design contexts". By doing so, the class targets new niches of the market, rather than answering existing ones. Hopefully, the class will provide some design tools transferable to next academic and/or professional contexts.

Approach
The design process aims at developing systems of services, products and communication, rather than single products.

Process
1. Investigation of the "privacy" issue in several public spaces:
Hospitals, schools, supermarkets, travel, workspaces, households… (1st week, Individually).
2. Search for communalities and creation of clusters, (1st week, in groups).
3. Generation of multiple scenarios of services, (2nd week, in groups).
4. Development of the service idea (3rd week, in groups)
5. Visualization of the design process (4th week, in groups).

Tool
Scenarios are used to generate, communicate and assess ideas. The course is based on the production of scenarios along the whole processes, from the beginning to the end.
